What causes an interior slab to sink?

Large concrete slabs are incredibly heavy, and they rely completely on the soil underneath to remain level. If that soil shrinks, washes away, or moves, the slab loses its underlying support system, cracks under its own weight, and sinks into the resulting empty spaces.

Underground plumbing leaks or poor outdoor water management wash away the fine subsoil beneath your concrete floor, leaving large, unsupported empty voids.

During severe droughts, expansive clay soils lose all moisture and shrink drastically, pulling away from the bottom of the slab and leaving it suspended in mid-air until it snaps and drops.

If the builder did not properly compact the dirt before pouring the concrete, the heavy weight of the slab and your household furniture will cause the loose soil to pack down unevenly over time, leading to major settlement.
